Weekly FinTech Tip: Proliferate the Culture You Want Throughout Your Organization
Hey! Everyone! Listen close.
If you’re going to do anything in your organization, your culture is the first thing you have to shift. If your culture is that employees don’t actually use your digital products, then how likely are they to evangelize those products to the customers or members that they serve? Create a culture where everyone is using your products. If your employees aren’t using your own services, you’ve lost before you started.
What are the key elements to changing your culture? Culture starts at the top – I’m speaking to you, Mr. CEO. Your job is to help define that culture and to proliferate it down to the far edges of your organization. If you are planning a shift, a digital transformation, then your culture must shift with it. That means you senior staff must model this culture. If they model this culture, their people will model it too. A lot of things that are cultural are historical and have happened way in the past. You’ve got to dispel anything in your past culture that is at odds with your current digital strategy. So, this culture shift means sometimes abandoning things where past culture references and creating new references that are more in line with your goals.
Finally, you’re going to have to reward the behaviors of those who are modeling the type of culture that you want to shift to. For instance, dogfooding; it occurs when an organization uses its own product. This can be a way for an organization to test its products in real-world usage. Are you dogfooding? I bet everybody who’s watching this video can read the report right now and tell me how many of their staff actually use their digital services. You should run that report. If it’s not close to 100%, you’ve got a problem. You can’t sell what you don’t use.
Your digital transformation will be as successful as your culture allows it to be.
